Lost Ireland

This is a list of the ‘lost’ (i.e. demolished or roofless shell/ruined) country houses of Ireland, in county/house name order. It accompanies the lists for Northern Ireland, EnglandScotland and Wales, to appreciate their design and craftspersonship at the height of their grandeur. The list’s starting source was the Knight of Glin et al book Vanishing Country Houses of Ireland, 1988 (VCHI), with Tudenham Park on the cover. If you wish to suggest additions to the list, or links to pre-loss photos, or assist with this project, please contact Andrew. The photo below is of Summerhill House, County Meath.

Approx 624 houses have been lost in total over the 26 counties, of which:

  • approx 250 houses were burnt in 1920-23 and not rebuilt (centenaries)
  • over 100 house shells (ruins) remain, with over 5 being restored

The ‘reason for loss’ letter codes after the year are explained on the Legend

Note: Details and links for many houses are still to be input, for which currently there is only a VCHI book source reference entry.
